Roger the Robber

Austin Johnson
Rodger the Robber
Authors note: This is a three paragraph essay about how Luella Bates Washington Jones completely altered Rodger’s character from an atrocious robber into an honest man.

It is usually very hard to turn a robber into an honest man just like it is always hard to make someone act the opposite they usually do. One of the characters in the short story “Thank you Ma’am” turns a child from a robber to a honest man by connecting with him
Rodger wanted some new shoes he got the money for them and more he found someone that could relate to him.  When someone steals from you your first reaction is to call the police or punish them.  But  ms. Luella Bates Washington Jones is different she saw an opportunity to teach Rodger.  Even though this boy tried and failed to steal from her she still saw a way for him to learn from this. She tell him to wash up and then she gives him some food. The boy understood that she wanted to help him because he had several chances to run. In the end the boy was let loose with money to buy his shoes.
Only Luella Bates Washington Jones would see the possibility of Rodger becoming an honest man.  All everyone needs is someone to understand them
